Blue blue blue

Sailing from American River
The perfect place for any boating activity. Blue skies, sandy beaches, clear blue waters all year round.
The Strawbridge Pointers, the local sailing group go out sailing from the American River Jetty every 2nd Wednesday of the month. Check with a local around the Marine Precinct as to when they are next going out, (weather permitting).
The groups activities are regularly featured in The Islander newspaper.
Some people mistake them for Porcupines - but in Australia, we have egg-laying mammals called Echidnas. This one was photographed along a dirt road, rolled into a ball because he was scared of the passing car. Drive with care please - we love to protect our lovely wildlife. This is just one example of the very special native animals across Kangaroo Island.
Close to sunrise and sunset - please SLOW DOWN - because that's when our animals are most active.

Our boat ramp is wonderful, only 3 minutes drive away from Sunrise on Falie. A safe, large carpark is available after you've launched. New pontoons make it easy to tie up and prepare. The calmness of American River makes boating and fishing a pleasure.

Bird watchers will love the unspoilt, natural beauty of Kangaroo Island, so rich in native flowering brush, it is simply Paradise for nectre seeking birds. You can spend hours watching them. The endangered Glossy Black Cockatoo makes its home in American River. Early evening is the best time to spot them at Sunrise on Falie.
About 15 minutes drive from Sunrise on Falie, Redbanks is a must visit spot at sunset. Standing atop the cliffs, look across towards Kingscote. You can follow a track down to the rock beach and have the cliffs tower above you. A very special place rich in colour and geological history.
Building the Independence
Welcome to American River's boat shed where we're building a replica of Schooner Independence, the first vessel built in South Australia ... a fun project for the town, and you're invited for a tour. Open daily 11am-3.30pm. Free entry.
Stand on the jetty to get a great view of Amerian River at sunset.
Out on the Water
Just out from the boat ramp crabing you just have to stop and enjoy the sunset. All you need is your iphone to take great photos.

There are special huts for bird watchers along the main road at American River.
Closest Beach to American River Pennington Bay is just magnificent.
