The story of Sunrise on Falie started back in 2002 when Kevin Matthews bought some land in the place he loved to go fishing, American River on Kangaroo Island.
“One day I will build my dream house overlooking my fishing grounds, ” he kept saying. Sure enough in 2011 Kevin did build his ‘dream house’ designed with daughter architect D’Arne Matthews. He moved in with his partner Yvonne and enjoyed entertaining friends and family in the ground level self-contained apartment.
In 2015 Kevin saw an opportunity with high demand for quality modern accommodation in and KI tourism on the rise. Booking.com and Airbnb were taking off as more visitors world wide preferred private accommodation to staying in traditional hotels. That was the start of Sunrise on Falie boutique accommodation named after the stunning sunrises seen almost every morning all year round on the property.
The first downstairs apartment quickly became popular with interstate and international guests wanting to stay somewhere central to the Island’s unique attractions.
In 2017 the second build began further up the hill with 2 mobility friendly apartments specially built for the hillside with natural bushland and sea views. Special ramps car-park had to be designed for wheelchair access.
In 2018 the apartments were opened and guests came from all over the world and Australia. Of course that was all to change in 2019 and 2020. Drought, bushfires, COVID19, border restrictions. The world changed and Sunrise on Falie changed too but we are still here and confident of a bright future.
In summer 2021 we start the year off with more border restrictions but interstate guests happy to postpone their holiday until later in the year and more South Aussies experiencing KI maybe for the first time with their fur babies.
