5 Day - 4 night exploration
From your central base at Sunrise on Failie you can visit different regions on different days to avoid excessive travel. Break your days up with shorter and longer trips or rest days as you will find the Island is bigger than you think and you do need to concentrate on the roads and watch out for wildlife. But you will be rewarded with spectacular scenery and unexpected wildlife experiences.
Day 1 As you leave the ferry, explore the Dudley Peninsular home of Dudley Wines, False Cape Wines, Cape Willoughby Lighthouse, Chapman River, Baudin Beach, Island Beach and Penneshaw.
Day 2 American River, Kingscote, Kangaroo Island Brewery, KI Spirits, Emu Bay and Emu Bay Lavender Farm.
Day 3 Head to the West Coast about 1and a half hours away and explore Flinders National Park, Remarkable Rocks, Admirals Arch, Hanson Bay, Vionne Bay and Seal Bay. The new ecologically sustainable Flinders Chase National Park Visitor Centre is now open. (July 2024)
Day 4 Head to the Northern beaches and Western River Cove. Snelling beach and Australia's best beach (2023) Stokes Bay are a must with a food stop at the Rock Cafe at Stokes Bay. Parndana and the wildlife park is on the way back to Sunrise on Falie as is Rapture Domain for some memorable wildlife experiences.
Day 5 You may wish to explore the Dudley Peninsular on your way back to the ferry at Penneshaw or visit areas closer to American River including Red banks or the Cannery Walk.
Keep in mind there are regular Sunday markets in Kingscote and Penneshaw and sometimes live music in some venues on the weekend you may wish to include in your activities.
Talk to Kevin and Yvonne about your interests and how to best enjoy the Island with the time you have available. There are many ways to enjoy our piece of paradise.
Night Walk
At the end of the day you can always do a self guided night walk from Sunrise on Falie down to the water. All you need is a mobile phone to light your way or a hand torch.
As most of the animals are active at night you could see tammar wallabies, brush tail and pygmy possums and hear the Southern Booboo Owl or Pacific Barn Owl. Walking along the beach (depending on the tides) listen out for stingrays, bird calls and if it is a full moon see the reflections on the water. Other possibilities include echidnas and of course Kangaroo Island kangaroos.
The night sky on a clear night is a wonderland. Look out for the Southern Cross constellation and with a tripod and time exposure you will have your own unique memory captured.
